Every M. Night Shyamalan Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
5. The Visit
After four consecutive duds of ballooning budget and scope, The Visit was a major breath of fresh air for the director.
Shot in secrecy with $5 million of Shyamalan's own money, this found footage horror-comedy saw him with complete creative control of the project, and while far from his very best works, was a refreshingly effective genre picture.
Watching the movie, focused on two siblings who spend a week with their grandparents who begin exhibiting peculiar behaviours, you can practically hear Shyamalan breathing a sigh of relief as he gets back to a more comfortable mode of filmmaking.
As played-out as found footage horror was back in 2015, Shyamalan's unique tonal sensibilities serve him well here, mining unexpected humour from the bizarre central situation.
The entire cast kills it, especially a brilliant Deanna Dunagan as "Nana," and Shyamalan sensibly offers up a twist that's more logical than ridiculous - it might not shock you, but it's appropriate for the material and effectively executed.
