Every M. Night Shyamalan Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Signs

Unbreakable Bruce Willis
Touchstone Pictures

An alien invasion movie was perfectly suited to Shyamalan's directorial sensibilities, and so it's little surprise that Signs is one of his strongest features to date.

Melding trenchant familial drama with a pervasively unnerving sense of dread, Signs also boasts some of the strongest performances in the director's filmography, with Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix turning in stellar work as the central sibling pairing.

Though just about everybody agrees the film's head-scratcher of an ending leaves plenty to be desired, for the first 90% of its runtime this is a lean, thoughtful, and downright scary sci-fi thriller which succeeds as both a B-movie homage and a genuinely riveting, character-driven suspense flick.
