Every M. Night Shyamalan Movie Ranked Worst To Best
13. After Earth (2013)
After Earth severely divided critics, but the general consensus remains the same a decade on: This is not a good film, despite its potential and intriguing worldbuilding.
Set a millennia in the future, the sci-fi flop follows a soldier (Will Smith) and his son (Jaden Smith) who crash-land on a hostile earth and must work together to evade the planet's hostile alien presence, who hunt their prey by sensing their fear. It's an unoriginal but enticing premise, quickly crushed.
Emotionally dull and groan-inducingly sentimental, After Earth drains the charisma of its stars down to a dejected sigh, and spends far too long trying to make a star of the younger, much less talented Smith. It has interesting visuals and means well, but Shyamalan has never been so lifeless or ill-fitting in the director's chair.
