Ever since his appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky Barnes has become one of the most popular supporting characters in the MCU. Whether he was fighting beside Steve, mindlessly trying to kill Steve, or being protected from the US government by Steve, it seems that Sebastian Stan can do no wrong.

A very different side of the character was shown throughout The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, to the point that it feels unfair he was still referred to as the Winter Soldier. He had had that part of his brain corrected by Shuri and Ayo in Wakanda, and was simply back to being Bucky.

At the beginning of the fourth episode of the series, the moment Bucky first heard his trigger words without losing control over his own mind was shown, and his response was utterly heartbreaking. The relief in his eyes as the tears streamed down his face was some of the finest acting Stan has offered during his time in the MCU, which is really saying something.

This was the death of the Winter Soldier, and allowed Bucky to be reborn a new man, no longer hamstrung by the threat of being brainwashed into a killer again.
