When Doctor Strange first met Tony Stark, there was a lot of tension over the latter’s suggestion of simply destroying the Time Stone. He didn’t quite understand the severity of the Sorcerer Supreme’s oath to protect it, and the lengths to which he would go to keep it.

However, after seeing 16 million different potential versions of the future, Strange understood that the protection of the Time Stone wasn’t the most important thing any more, it was the protection of the universe.

He had told Tony that if it came down to saving either Iron Man, Spider-Man, or the Infinity Stone, he would save the Stone without hesitation. Yet, when this exact situation came into play later on Titan, Strange saw the greater good in letting the Stone go, and while it didn’t appear to make much sense to begin with, without this move, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes never could have defeated the Mad Titan.

The Sorcerer Supreme may have helped Thanos complete his Gauntlet, and subsequently have the power to snap his fingers, but he saved Tony Stark’s life. This, above all else, was priceless.
