Alongside the likes of Captain America and Thor, Hawkeye became something of a joke among the mainstream audiences. With no powers, and the very real threat of running out of arrows, he simply couldn’t compete on the same levels as his Avengers teammates.

However, as he made more and more appearances in the franchise, his value became clear. Clint Barton is, in reality, a solid character, and has had some strong moments in the MCU. None however, comes close to trying to sacrifice himself for the good of the universe, yet still having to see his best friend throw herself off a cliff.

When Thanos snapped his fingers, Clint was the only survivor from his family. His wife and three children were killed, and it took Hawkeye to a dark place. He essentially went on a killing spree for the next five years until Natasha pulled him out of it.

When the time came to trade a soul for a soul on Vormir, Clint believed that he had to go. In his own mind he was past the point of no return with nothing left to lose. He tried to sacrifice himself so that countless billions could live, but he was beaten to the punch. Surely it wouldn't be possible to ever truly process what happened to Clint on Vormir.
