What a horrid Celestial swine.

The opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy is singularly the hardest scene to watch in the entire MCU. Despite all the jovial events to follow, the memory of Peter Quill's childhood trauma of losing his mother never wanders too far.

This is all the more reason why the bombshell midway into the sequel hits so hard. After a seemingly nice catch up period, Ego, Star Lord's true-blood Celestial father, reveals that he deliberately placed the tumor which killed Quill's mother, a reprehensible act, however you look at it.

Quill's initial response, which was to immediately riddle his godly father with gun shots is more than apt, as Ego's actions are still among the most callous in the MCU. His entire unapologetic attitude also contributes to the dismay, as he goes on to accuse his son of being selfish, before morphing into an outraged David Hasselhoff. Their following standoff grows ever more epic as the film progresses, but no moment is as hard hitting as this initial cold-hearted admission.
