The Winter Soldier was riddled with mystery and deceit, and it's still the most thriller-esque of all the MCU movies. Amidst the corrupt fragmentation of SHEILD and the unruly return of Bucky Barnes, a more sinister and markedly clever secret awaited revelation.

Following the cataclysmic evens of Avengers Assemble, viewers forgot that Hydra was ever a thing. So its computerised resurgence as a manipulative villainous force was as much a surprise to us as it was the characters themselves, which is clever in itself. After all, who else was Captain America supposed to go up against in his own solo movie? In the long run, it was a fairly obvious play, but done so sneakily that the reveal packed a real punch.

The second implication of this was that some long-standing sideline MCU characters were outed as members of Hydra's ranks, including Agent Jasper Sitwell and sleazy politician Senator Stern. It gave the otherwise linear SHEILD narrative a nice shake up, and allowed viewers to re-watch older movie clips under an entirely different light.
