Every Major MCU Villain Ranked Worst To Best
4. Adrian Toomes/Vulture - Spider-Man: Homecoming
When Michael Keaton initially dropped out of playing the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it was a travesty because it came just as his career was back in its ascendancy. But Marvel were committed and got their man in the end and their reward was an excellent performance that fit in line with Keaton's broader career in a particularly clever way.
Keaton's Adrian Toomes is a full spectrum villain, who combined an old school monster movie vibe in the way he's framed in his tech suit to the image of a sympathetic blue collar man crushed under the boot of a corporate monster. It's impossible not to feel something for the position he finds himself in, which is really a credit to the writing and to Keaton's performance.
Crucially, at no point does the complexity compromise his menace or the threat he represents to Peter Parker and that scene in the car on the way to the homecoming dance that sees him realise that Peter Parker is Spider-Man is as exhilarating as it is chilling. For that and throughout, Keaton feels like he's genuinely having fun and it needs to an easily charming performance that we'll hopefully see more of in the future.
