Every Martin Scorsese Movie Ranked Worst To Best
24. New York, New York (1977)
How does one follow up the staggering success and achievement of something like Taxi Driver? Why, by taking the lead actor and making a musical extravaganza set in post-WWII New York, of course!
Upon release, New York, New York was an infamous flop, throwing Scorsese into deep depression and drug addiction, but seeing it all these later makes you wonder why. Yes, it's quite messy and its characters feel marginal, but its set pieces and musical numbers make it far more enjoyable than its reputation suggests.
It's noticeably Scorsese-lite, but New York, New York still makes for an exciting little viewing experience, full of joy and romance. If it had been made by anyone else, it would have been a hit; following Taxi Driver, it was probably doomed from the start.
