Without Jeff Bridges' performance as Obadiah Stane in Iron Man, we wouldn't have got either Justin Hammer or Aldrich Killian in his wake. He set the model for how to introduce Tony Stark's enemies - as business rivals with a sort of "there but for the grace of God go I" spirit to them.

Stane is everything that Stark could have become if not for his terrorist-enforced moment of revelation in Iron Man - and indeed if he hadn't become the armoured hero. He is driven by power, money and profile and ruined by his jealousy of Stark, as well as infuriated by his cleaner morals.

Bridges is conniving and brilliant, offering an atypical performance that is all about power and which offers the perfect foundation for the sillier transition into Iron Monger.
