Every Marvel Comic Book Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

43. Punisher (1989)

Dolph Lundgren The Punisher 1989
New World Pictures

Perhaps because of the presence of moody Euro-trash Dolph Lundgren in the title role, the first attempt to make a Punisher movie has something of a cult following, but that ignores the fact that in every single typical metric, it's a very bad film.

Putting aside the fact that it's nowhere near an adaptation of the comic (even the curious decision to paint stubble on Lundgren's face didn't make him look right), it's nothing more than a cliched, bloody action movie. Director Mark Goldblatt has some seriously impressive credits as an editor, but it seems the step up to editing just wasn't for him.

Were it to come out today (minus the lead star), it might have done better, but there's no escaping the script issues or the general lack of substance between the punchy bits.
