In much the same way as Clint, Sam is an ordinary human, hanging around with extraordinary people. Though he has an incredibly unique skill set, it wasn't the Falcon programme that brought Captain America to him. Instead, it was luck, and Steve needing a place to lay low.

From then, Sam gradually became more and more involved in the antics of the Avengers. He turned down the opportunity to track Von Strucker and Hydra, instead sticking to chasing cold leads on the whereabouts of the Winter Soldier, but after what happened in Sokovia, Falcon was welcomed onto the team.

Thanks in part to his military background, Sam can more than hold his own in a physical fight. He went toe to toe with Spider-Man in the airport in Germany, and though he found himself on the losing end of the altercation, he certainly didn't embarrass himself.

However, strength is not why Falcon is such a valued member of the Avengers. It is the ability to fly, Redwing, and the incredible way his wings can be used as lethal weapons.
