13. Jon Watts

Thor Ragnarok Taika Waititi

Directed:

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

Spider-Man: Homecoming was a flat-looking Marvel movie that, while overall strong, had distractingly uninspired direction. Given that this is the third incarnation of Spider-Man in 15 years, we'd already seen Sam Raimi and Marc Webb direct the hell out of their movies, so the lackluster, TV-Movie style visuals of this one did stick out like a sore thumb.

Jon Watts' direction is not bad or anything; rather, it's just fairly bland. Give that the rest of the film was so good there was more than enough to overshadow the uninteresting visual style, but compare this to Sam Raimi's epic, comic book-like visuals and Marc Webb's brilliant cinematography and unforgettable tracking shots (despite the overall lackluster nature of his films) and it can't be denied that this shortcoming was disappointing.

Jon Watts is coming back for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Hopefully he can add a bit of panache to things next time.
