Every MCU Director's Best Film (NOT In The MCU)

5. Scott Derrickson – Sinister

Following the high-profile departures of Whedon and Wright, Kevin Feige and co. decided to take a slightly more hands off approach with Phase 3. Directors were allowed more creative range to make the movies they wanted and as such we were treated to a host of innovative and unique Marvel movies which never felt bogged down by the stress of setting up future instalments.

One of those was Doctor Strange, which visually was nothing like any previous MCU outing and contained only the faintest of connections to the wider cinematic universe. Unique also was its director, Scott Derrickson.

Unlike most other directors on this list, who had a background in comedy, Derrickson was very much a horror specialist, with a filmography that included The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver Us From Evil.

His best and most famous film would be Sinister. Starring the always brilliant Ethan Hawke, Sinister is a bloody scary movie about a true crime novelist who discovers his new house is harbouring a dark and deadly secret. While the bulk of its plot is fairly conventional and its over-reliance on jump scares can get annoying, Sinister stands out from the competition thanks to its utterly terrifying visuals. It is a beautifully crafted and well-acted horror feature, with a diabolical final twist that never fails to fill you with dread.

Sadly, Derrickson will not be returning for Doctor Strange In the Multiverse Of Madness, citing creative differences. However, the sequel looks to be in good hands with Sam Raimi, of the original Spider-Man trilogy and Evil Dead fame, taking on the reins.
