29. Captain Marvel (2019)

Captain Marvel Brie Larson
Marvel Studios

Easily the best part of Captain Marvel is its eponymous heroine, portrayed by Brie Larson as a woman betrayed by her memories, caught between two worlds, but able to rise to the occasion and find where she was meant to be.

An empowering tale of identity that masquerades as a mystery flick, Carol Danvers' debut does best when it focusses on its main character, but stumbles with its unwanted fan service (a de-aged Sam Jackson gives us insight into how Fury lost his eye), tangled story, and need to insert itself into the wider MCU.

It's an on-the-nose affair, full of sloppy call-backs, set-ups and bland 90s nostalgia, but focus on Larson and Danvers and you'll find much to love despite its flaws.
