20. Black Widow (2021)

Shang Chi
Marvel Studios

Following a two-year gap between theatrical releases, the MCU returned to the big screen with a film made ten years too late, but which nonetheless adds depth to the core characters and promises a bright future for the franchise.

Allowing Scarlett Johansson to take centre stage as the titular Black Widow, the film takes place after the events of Civil War, and finds Natasha confronting her past in hopes of saving her future.

There are some issues with the story - including Ray Winstone's atrociously accented villain, forced sentimentality, and the sometimes sloppy CGI - but thanks to Johansson's committed leading turn, the work of co-stars Florence Pugh and David Harbour, and its lofty themes of liberation and exploitation, it makes for a mostly fitting send-off to one of the series' most dependable stars.
