15. Iron Man (2008)
Over a decade of cinema, numerous box office records, dozens of fan favourite characters - it all started here, with Jon Favreau's daring, expertly crafted action flick chronicling the origins of Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man.
At its core a striking character study of a man forced to face his legacy and confront his role in the world's worst atrocities, Iron Man is also a spotless superhero origin story, an action-comedy, and occasionally a drama with a great villain and strong emotional centre.
The best aspect of the film, though, is Downey Jr, an actor who people were apprehensive of accepting in the lead role but whose performance nonetheless justified the existence of not just this one great superhero flick, but the entire series of movies that followed.
