Every MCU Romance Ranked From Worst To Best
6. T'Challa & Nakia
While romance took a necessary backseat in Black Panther, that didn't mean it was absent altogether.
From the moment that Wakanda's new king, T'Challa, extracted War Dog Nakia from an undercover op so that she could witness his coronation, it was clear that these two shared history and, throughout the course of the film, we would discover that they were indeed once lovers.
Therein lies this romance's greatest strength - it was built upon their history which meant that they already knew each other well and, thus, could openly discuss what went wrong and how things could be different this time around. A convenient device, sure, but it was executed to a much greater extent than other off-screen romances (and even some on-screen ones) and it ultimately complemented the story these two were attempting to tell.
Nakia is one of the few people who challenges T'Challa and, while that conveys how formidable a character she is, it also highlights how important she is to him because, in spite of everything that went down in the past, he listens to her and, most importantly, he still loves her.
This rekindled romance was a classic example of how love didn't have to be the main feature and yet could still be important enough to warrant a mature and cohesive narrative - an approach that other MCU installments could learn a thing or two from.
