8. Taking Over The World - Loki (The Avengers)

MCU Villains
Marvel Studios

Much like Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos was behind everything that happened in Avengers Assemble, though we didn't realise it until after the credits. However, despite it being a crossover unlike anything we'd seen before on the big screen, Loki kind of stole the show.

After being given the sceptre by Thanos, a tool with which to take the Tesseract and conquer Earth, Loki surgically picked apart the Avengers. He brought Barton on to his side, he unleashed the Hulk on the helicarrier, almost killing Natasha Romanoff, and he trapped Thor and dropped him to what was very nearly his death.

While his motive was world domination, it went deeper than the likes of Ronan or Dormammu. Loki was sick of living in the shadow of his big brother, and if he couldn't be King of Asgard, a job which he thought he would be far better suited to than Thor, he would rule elsewhere.

Loki's actions and methods, even before he unleashed the planet's first ever alien invasion, gave every single Avenger a reason to fight him, and a reason to come together as a team. Without that, there would be no 'Earth's Mightiest Heroes' at all.
