Though far from the best villain in the franchise, Ivan Vanko was nonetheless a powerful adversary to Tony Stark, who at this point was still enjoying early days as Iron Man.

Wanting revenge on the Stark family for what they did to his late inventor father, Vanko made it his vision to destroy Tony with his own technology.

Becoming Whiplash and teaming up with Justin Hammer in order to better his suit, Vanko basically ended up making an Iron Monger suit with powerful electrified whips, able to cut through almost anything and stun Iron Man and War Machine. It took both Tony and Rhodes to kill Whiplash, cementing the villain's place as one of the most surprisingly strong antagonists in the franchise.
