Every Modern Disney Live Action Remake (So Far) Ranked
7. Maleficent (2014)
Maleficent is a mixed bag, but ranks just a little higher for being both memorable and so different that it's difficult to call it a remake so much as a spinoff. Angelina Jolie does a fantastic job in her role as a much more sympathetic and fun character, with her relationship with the film's Sleeping Beauty a charming highlight.
Far from the most solid film in the Disney remake lineup, with some elements that don't feel completely fleshed out, Maleficent is carried on the fantasy concepts that work, and the character that is compelling as both a protagonist and a complex villain-slash-anti-hero. The relationships in this film are surprisingly mature, with dark elements of violence and betrayal that seem to skirt past its low PG rating.
As with all Disney remakes, the visuals are stunning, and the costume design and VFX behind Maleficent herself are brilliant to watch. Though a lot of it doesn't work as well as it should, it's still a memorable and unique and fun film, with a great emotional centre that deserves praise.
Not to mention how perfect Angelina Jolie is in this role.
