Every Modern Disney Live Action Remake (So Far) Ranked
4. Aladdin (2019)
While Beauty And The Beast was a relatively more solid movie, Aladdin does a lot more with its source material that deserves praise as an adaptation.
While the main story remains intact, details are tweaked in a way that works in favour of the cast, who perform very different versions of their characters from the original film (apart from Aladdin, who's mostly the same character).
Will Smith in particular is a vast departure from the late great Robin Williams's Genie, but he adds his own unique spin to it that feels appropriately respectful rather than making any attempt to copy what Williams did perfectly.
The energy in this film is what really carries it, however. The songs and dance numbers are fantastically dynamic and well-choreographed, performed well in a style just different enough from the original without sacrificing quality.
While not all of the changes worked (with the added Jasmine song feeling out of place in amongst the adapted soundtrack), Aladdin, unlike some of the other Disney remakes, actually did enough different to justify the film being remade. Add to that visually stunning sets and costume designs and VFX, and you have a great musical film worth experiencing.
