Every Movie Based On A Saturday Night Live Sketch - Ranked From Worst To Best

8. Superstar

The very notion that a character like Mary Katherine Gallagher needs an origin story is just plain silly, and not in the way that makes you laugh. She was as monotonous as SNL characters come, relying solely on a weird mix of sexual tension and hygiene-related physical comedy to get the sketches off the ground. It became a bit of a drag after the second or third iteration. But dammit if this movie doesn't somehow, some way end up a much better product than what was presented to the crowds of Studio 8H. The basic character beats are still the same, but they work a little better in these surroundings. Maybe it's because so much of the sketches involved Molly Shannon steamrolling over everyone else in the scene - and that's mostly fixed here - but Mary Katherine Gallagher comes off a little sweeter and less irksome. Will Ferrell also does better work here as the high school jock/dreamboat of Gallagher's affection than he did in his own starring, SNL-based vehicle.
