Every Movie Based On A Saturday Night Live Sketch - Ranked From Worst To Best

7. MacGruber

The question most of the population asks whenever another Saturday Night Live sketch is optioned for the big screen is one that Lorne Michaels rarely seems to ask himself: Does this really need to be made? The answer as it relates to MacGruber? No. Absolutely not. God no. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? There's a legitimate possibility that MacGruber is based entirely around the jokes that Will Forte and screenwriter (and Lonely Island member) Jorma Taccone had cut from the many, many sketches they wrote for the character on SNL. And although that could apply to most SNL feature films (how many of the jokes from The Ladies Man do you think they scraped off the writer's room floor), it actually seems to bolster this 80s action pastiche. Nothing is off limits, whether that be an extended sex scene between MacGruber and the ghost of his ex-wife or MacGruber constantly ripping out his enemies' throats with his bare hands. This is the kind of graphic, lengthy slapstick that occurs when you let your creation function outside of 30 second jokes aired on live television. Is that a good thing? Maybe not for everyone. But it was still a better send-up of 80s action movies than any of The Expandables.
