5. About A Boy (2014) - TV

People largely enjoyed the About a Boy TV remake as it was charming, funny and had a good heart. The show starred David Walton as Will Freeman, the easy-going, almost man child refusing to grow up and accept adult responsibility, and Benjamin Stockham as Marcus Bowa, the bullied kid with a heart of gold who moves in next door and takes a shining to his older neighbour.

For people who have grown up watching the About a Boy film or loved the book, this NBC aired show provided a continuation of Marcus and Will’s story and attempted to write it past what we know. The concept is expanded wider than the original material and if you take this show as its own entity, you can begin to enjoy it.

When the About a Boy TV show lays heavily on the sarcasm and humour rather than saccharine American TV tropes, it can be really good. It’s the kind of comedy show that you can let wash over you and it’s not going to profoundly change your life like some of Hornby’s novels might, but it’s fun and sweet, and isn’t that most of the point?
