Every Nick Robinson Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
7. Native Son
Native Son is no stranger to adaptations. The Richard Wright novel had been adapted to the big screen twice already - in 1951 and 1986 respectively - but this 2019 edition attempted to do something a little bit different.
Having had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, it was released exclusively by HBO Films and, in a way, attempted to modernise its controversial source material. What it produced both works and doesn't.
It's certainly admirable in its conviction but not everything translates well to the modern day approach. And yet, there are some incredibly striking and powerful moments throughout - and those that aren't are elevated by Ashton Sanders' remarkable leading performance. On that note, Robinson and Margaret Qualley do a great job in their own right, complementing Sanders in the process.
And you know what? It might just be the best adaptation of the novel thus far.
