Every Peter Jackson Film Ranked Worst To Best
9. The Frighteners (1996)
After the death of his wife, an architect called Frank (Michael J. Fox) gains the ability to communicate with the dead, and uses his newfound abilities to make money as an exorcist. After the ghost of a serial killer (Jake Busey) hits the scene, though, Frank decides to put his talents to better use and stop the evil murderer before it's too late.
A silly premise with a sillier execution, The Frighteners is visually delightful and darkly funny. Fox is on top form as the film's eccentric protagonist, and there are a few solid scares thrown in for good measure, but there are problems with the finished product.
Most of the issues come down to the messy narrative and a frequent lack of restraint on Jackson's part, but with its flash visuals, odd humour and crazy plot, it makes for a fun if too-surreal-for-its-own-good cult comedy-horror.
