Every Philip Seymour Hoffman Movie Ranked Worst To Best

19. Gunther Bachmann - A Most Wanted Man (2014)

Phillip Seymour Hoffman Doubt
Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions/Entertainment One

Starring in a John le Carré adaptation proved to be a great move for Hoffman, giving him a chance to dig into a genre he'd had little experience in. A Most Wanted Man is dark, ominous and maddeningly ambiguous, and sees Hoffman playing a counterterrorism agent beaten down the vicious game of cat and mouse that runs through the plot of the movie.

It's far from a cheery spectacle - and it doesn't live up to the heights of 2011's le Carré film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - but A Most Wanted Man is a masterclass in crafting a spotless espionage thriller, and features Hoffman at the height of his powers once more.
