Every Philip Seymour Hoffman Movie Ranked Worst To Best

5. Jacob Elinsky - 25th Hour (2002)

Phillip Seymour Hoffman Doubt
Buena Vista Pictures

Spike Lee's masterful 25th Hour has been lauded over the years for its portrayal of life in New York following the tragedy of 9/11. Released mere months after the attacks, the drama follows three friends (Hoffman, Ed Norton and Barry Pepper) as they spend one last together before Norton's upcoming prison sentence for selling drugs.

The three leads are all exceptional, but Hoffman's role is the most interesting, since it feels so different to his other, much more intense performances.

As shy introverted high school teacher Jacob, Hoffman is timid and sad, and adds an innocent lightness to the film that is nothing if not a deeply trpubling drama.
