17. Finding Dory

Up Carl Ellie
Pixar

The enormity of Finding Nemo's legacy can't ever be overstated, and so this long-awaited sequel had a hell of a lot to live up to.

Ultimately it's nowhere near as compelling as the original, but nevertheless a rock solid follow-up that shrewdly shifts the perspective to Dory (Ellen DeGeneres).

The humour is broader and sillier than the first Nemo and it lacks the same emotional import, but Finding Dory still finds poignance in exploring the difficulties of getting through life with a debilitating mental illness.

The supporting vocal cast is also fantastic, especially Kaitlin Olson, Ed O'Neill, Idris Elba, and Dominic West.

All in all Finding Dory is a welcome return to this world and these characters - it's affable comfort food even if it never quite feels like a totally "necessary" sequel.
