Delivering a surprisingly entertaining steampunk yarn at the back end of the XY era, Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel rallied to give Pokemon its best film for over half-a-decade, since the Diamond and Pearl series - though admittedly, that was not necessarily much of a stretch to make.

It calls up the idealism-versus-cynicism debate that has run through much of the franchise's binary approach to good and evil, but the trappings - including a bit involving Ash being somewhat magically chained to the titular beast - gives it more mileage than it has any real right to.
