If there's one thing Ridley Scott strives for most in his films, it's a sense of epic scope. 1492: Conquest of Paradise is no exception to this trait, as Scott takes a deep dive into Christopher Columbus' (GĂ©rard Depardieu) journey to the New World and his effects on the indigenous people he came across.

1492 features Scott's typically sharp eye for beautiful scenery and sweeping shots that capture the true natural wonder of the film's setting, but like many of his weaker projects suffers as it struggles to really explore the challenging themes it brings up.

Outside of the visual treats it offers up, 1492's biggest asset is Depardieu, who breathes life into Columbus with a complex and wholly human performance. Even so, he and the stunning scenery aren't enough to save the historical drama from its biggest faults, which really is a shame given the film's lofty ambitions.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
