22. Someone To Watch Over Me (1987)

Ripley Scott has a couple films like '87's Someone to Watch Over Me. Look up "generic crime thriller" in the dictionary, chances are you'll find a picture of Tom Berenger doing his best hard-cop-with-a-heart-of-gold routine.

The movie is far from original, sporting a predictable plot - a detective (Berenger) falls in love with the woman (Mimi Rodgers) he's been sent to protect - and some of the most stock-footage 80s action sequences you're likely to find, but it benefits from a determined supporting turn from Lorraine Bracco and Scott's dependably impressive direction and moody visuals.

Aside from decent entertainment value, Someone to Watch Over Me is about as uninspired and safe a film as Scott has ever made, and watching it all these years later really makes you wonder why he agreed to it after so long pushing the boundaries of what cinema could achieve.
