Every Ridley Scott Movie Ranked Worst To Best

20. Black Rain (1989)

Starring Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia - a dream pairing if ever there was one, especially in 89 - Black Rain saw Ridley Scott try his hand at a conventional action thriller and do a remarkably decent job considering the dour script, flimsy characters and predictability.

Yes, Scott's direction is by far the best part of the film, as two New York cops (Douglas and Garcia) journey to Japan and find themselves thrown head-first into the local criminal underworld.

Scott perfectly captures the dark and tension-filled setting of Japan's urban metropolis, which hides a series of sinister secrets and dangers. The intensity is dialled up to eleven throughout, and though the aforementioned script finds it slipping into predictable, brainless action fun, it's very well held together by its cool aesthetic and occasionally exciting action beats.

More daring was needed to make Black Rain a great film, but all told it's still a decent popcorn action flick.
