And of course, was anything else ever going to take the #1 spot? But it would be disingenuous to say that Rocky is only the best because it came first, because it's so damn effective as not only an underdog sports movie but a gritty, grounded character-driven drama and romance.

It's a simply story passionately told, with an eye for little details and a total lack of the pomp that would characterise even most of the better sequels.

Stallone certainly earned his Best Actor and Best Screenplay nominations, crystallising a franchise formula that's proven popular for over four decades and been widely imitated elsewhere.

Rather than a quaint relic which got the series where it is today, Rocky still proves an intensely charming winner and the undefeated best of the lot.
