The End: William was the killer all along and murders Ezekiel's father in a trap before escaping.

This ending is another hit-or-miss one.

Starting with the negatives, the twist that William (Max Minghella) was the killer was so obvious that it was kind of hilarious. As soon as his 'death' wasn't fully shown on-screen, it was all too clear where things were heading. Also, wouldn't forensics have been able to prove that the corpse which William used to fake his death wasn't his body?

Additionally, the trap Ezekiel's (Chris Rock) father is in isn't particularly interesting at first.

Nonetheless, the death of Marcus Banks (Samuel L Jackson) was undeniably powerful. The puppet mechanism in his trap (which made him look like a shooter and tricked the SWAT team into killing him) was a brilliant touch and the whole finale was pretty sobering.

The revelations about police corruption - a very topical subject right now - in the film's police department ended the film on an effectively pessimistic note that is likely to leave viewers feeling a bit grim about everything. That's always the sign of a powerful climax.

Essentially, most of the ending scene isn't particularly great, but the film's final moment rescues it.
