Every Saw Movie Ranked Worst To Best

3. Saw IV

As touched upon, the Saw franchise quickly became synonymous with final act reveals that absolutely changed the game and rewrote what you thought you knew from the previous movies. Those monologues, those flashbacks, those twists and turns to what had been established - when done well, it was mesmerising to watch play out.

Of course, those reveals eventually became far too stretched and 'twists for the sake of twists', but the first four Saw movies utilised this trope in a way that brilliantly made sense. After Saw IV? Yeah, those swerves became a little too illogically revisionist.

Picking up in the aftermath of the deaths of John Kramer and his apprentice Amanda Young, the FBI become convinced that there must've been a third person assisting this duo in their heinous acts. Ever the prepared sort, though, Kramer has left behind one final cassette which ominously promises that the games have only just begun.

Saw IV has so much going for it; Lyric Bent's Daniel Rigg gets to take centre-stage, Detective Matthews is back in the frame, Detective Hoffman clearly gets a lot more to do than his small role in Saw III, FBI Agent Strahm is introduced, and we learn how John and his wife Jill suffered a tragic miscarriage years prior.

This 2007 effort is also one of the most disturbing in the series, bringing some proper grim and gruesome acts to life in a way that pleased many a gore-hound.
