Every Saw Trap Ranked From Worst To Best
22. Saw IV - The Ice Block Trap
Trap: Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) and Mark Hoffman (posing as a victim) were on a see-saw. If the trap activated, two ice blocks would swing down on Matthews' head and crush it; his death would tip the see-saw and Hoffman would be electrocuted in some water (supposedly).
The plotting in Saw IV didn't really work and its tragic ending, in which Rigg fails his test and gets Detective Matthews killed, was very irritating. It turns out that in order to save Matthews, Rigg had to arrive after the timer to his test had ran out; this was Jigsaw's way of trying to teach Rigg patience, but it makes very little sense on any level. Who could've possibly worked that out? Ridiculous.
Still, the actual trap is awesome, the special effects rock and the reveal of Hoffman as a new apprentice was, at the time, a jolting shock even if he ultimately proved a lame villain in subsequent instalments.
