Every Sequel To Best Picture Oscar Winners - Ranked

1. The Godfather Part II

The Godfather 2 Al Pacino

The Godfather Part II is an easy pick for the top spot on this list, since it's the only sequel on it that truly lived up to, and in some ways surpassed, the original.

To date, The Godfather is the only movie series to deliver two Best Picture winners, and consistency was the key to its success. Francis Ford Coppola returned to the director's chair for the sequel, much of the main cast was retained along with shrewd additions, and the story was based on unused material from Mario Puzo’s novel.

The follow-up showed no shortage of ambition by attempting to be a prequel and a sequel in one package. Not only did it a achieve that, it connected to its predecessor seamlessly, turning the first two Godfather movies into a cohesive whole.

Nobody needs reminding that The Godfather Part II has always been a frontrunner for the title of greatest sequel ever made, or that it includes a career-best performance from Al Pacino, who was robbed of a Best Actor gong the year it came out when the Academy wrongly handed it to Art Carney for his role in Harry and Tonto.
