Every Sequel To Best Picture Oscar Winners - Ranked

2. Rocky II

The Godfather 2 Al Pacino

It's apt that one of the greatest underdog movies of all time pulled off a string of unlikely feats at the 1977 Academy Awards, knocking out such heavyweights as All The Presidents Men and Taxi Driver to claim the Best Picture gong.

If there's one thing Rocky has attracted more of than critical acclaim over the years, it's sequels, starting with Rocky II in 1979. The second instalment did a decent job convincing the audience to root for the underdog once again, even though the original made it clear the outcome of his showdown with Apollo was unimportant.

Although the sequel was more concerned with setting up an epic showdown in the ring than meaningful character development, Rocky II during its best moments is nothing less than raucous entertainment, from its training montage to its final fight.

As was the case with most Rocky sequels, this one was never going to emulate the Oscar feats of the original, but it's a hugely enjoyable popcorn flick nonetheless.
