Every Sequel To Best Picture Oscar Winners - Ranked
3. Ziegfeld Girl
Robert Z Leonard's all-singing, all-dancing The Great Ziegfeld was a runaway success when it pranced on the scene in 1936, winning three Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Dance Direction, that year and netting MGM a tidy profit.
Ziegfeld Girl was one of two sequels to follow in the ensuing years and, unlike most items on this list, it did recapture the hokey magic of the original thanks to stellar casting. Jimmy Stewart, Judy Garland and Hedy Lamarr took on the lead roles.
Sure, it's melodramatic at times and cheaply recycled footage from the original, but Ziegfeld Girl should be weighed and measured on its production numbers and they're never less than lavishly entertaining, particularly Garland's renditions of I'm Always Chasing Rainbows and Minnie the Moocher.
