8. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 (2017)

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 Groot Hi
Marvel Studios

Some will tell you that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 is high on its own supply, and they'll probably try and have you believe that this is somehow a bad thing. As if removing the training wheels from James Gunn's gleeful, cocky first movie for one that pushes all of the most charming elements further could be.

Vol 2 is even more heartfelt than the original, with emotional punches at the end that will genuinely leave you sobbing, despite how obvious the twists are. Thanks to exceptional scripting and characterisation - helped hugely by excellent casting - the story is really king, even with lots of very silly new elements, and it's impossible not to be utterly intoxicated by Peter's hunt for a father.

It's hilarious at the same time - which has been a problem for cynics - and Gunn once more proves he has an eye for the kind of spectacle most other directors wouldn't even consider. And while the effects work on the Planet Ego sequence aren't all 100%, it still manages to look great.

As with any sequel, the new additions have to be judged in special terms, and everything from Baby Groot to Kurt Russell's duplicitous Ego are worthy bolt-ons.
