Every Single MCU Film Ranked From Worst To Best

14. Thor (2011)

It's pretty stunning that a movie as good - and as well-measured - as Thor can only come in at 13th in such a ranking, but that's the sort of quality you're looking at at the top of the MCU ladder. But make no mistake, Thor is a very good film and the gap in quality between it and The Incredible Hulk is chasmic.

The film works mostly because of Kenneth Branagh's eyes for theatrical staging and the casting of his two most important characters. Tom Hiddleston in particular is excellent (and actually much better than a Chris Hemsworth still wearing his character a little uncomfortably - before the humour later introduced added gloss) and it's no accident that he's been an MCU mainstay ever since. Even Natalie Portman is good, as this very much came before Marvel stopped caring about its female characters.

It's essentially a Crocodile Dundee remake with Norse mythology, frost giants and lashings of Oedipal conflict, and that's absolutely not a problem.

It struggles at times with the weight of exposition, but the balance is mostly right and there's a personality in there that was fatally absent from the follow-up.
