Every Spike Lee Movie Ranked Worst To Best

21. Oldboy (2013)

Do The Right Thing
FilmDistrict

If there's one thing Spike Lee is, it's a man willing to challenge himself, something he proved when he decided to remake the classic South Korean revenge thriller Oldboy for American audiences.

An unsettling and violent story about a man (Josh Brolin) confined to a room for decades by an unknown kidnapper, Lee's remake stays faithful to the far superior original, but lacks the sharp visuals and emotional heft of its inspiration.

Also, of the first-rate cast - Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Sharlto Copley, Lance Reddick - it's clear none of them are particularly interested in the material or its surprisingly dull execution.
