Star Trek: Beyond is a phenomenal Star Trek film, and while yes, it did preemptively spoil its big twist in its own marketing, that doesn't take away from the fact it was the most Trek-like Trek film since First Contact released around twenty years earlier.

The third film in the J. J. Abrams-helmed reboot, Beyond was directed by Fast and Furious favourite Justin Lin, with the script provided by self-professed Trekkie Simon Pegg and writer Doug Jung. The film, much like the Undiscovered County, also arrived at an important moment in the franchise's history; the fiftieth anniversary of the series was taking place, and both Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin had tragically passed away during its production.

There was a lot of emotion surrounding Beyond, and the fact the film was an unabashed celebration of Star Trek meant that it succeeded on all fronts. Idris Elba's Krall was a fantastic villain, Sofia Boutella was formidable as rebel alien Jaylah, and the aforementioned reboot cast were all brilliant as usual.

The occasion of Star Trek's fiftieth birthday may have ultimately helped Beyond, but it's pure Trek through and through, and the perfect distillation of old and new.
