Every Star Trek Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
5. Star Trek (2009)
J. J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot was always going to raise a few eyebrows for daring to retread old ground, but to say it wasn't a success would clearly be dishonest.
Although a Star Wars man by his own admission, the 2009 Star Trek reboot served as a fantastic introduction to Roddenberry's mythos for new fans and as a reintroduction to it for older ones. By making the film take place concurrently with the events of the original series (having situated it in something called the Kelvin Timeline), the Star Trek reboot dares not to stand on the toes of what came before it. Rather, it serves as a celebration of those earlier films and TV shows while cutting through some of its more unfounded stereotypes.
Chris Pine was an inspired choice to play Kirk, and Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho and the late Anton Yelchin were all equally brilliant in their respective roles. More important, however, was its reappraisal of Star Trek as a brand, with Abrams' film serving as a jumping on point for a whole new generation of Trekkies who would, at one point in time, perhaps not have even tried.
The Trek today might be different to the one of old, but in keeping the franchise relevant, the 2009 film had an integral part to play.
