Every Stephen King Movie Ranked Worst To Best

21. Apt Pupil (1998)

Stephen King Movies Ranked
TriStar Pictures

Another young-man-befriends-older-stranger-with-secrets piece, this, but a very different one from Hearts In Atlantis. Apt Pupil goes for the disturbing rather than the cheery, but the results are even more profound.

The film follows a young boy (Brad Renfro) who befriends a fugitive Nazi war criminal (Ian McKellen), and the results offer a powerful dissection of human evil, malice and memory. It was a box office flop, which inspired director Bryan Singer to produce X-Men, so we technically owe a lot of the superhero boom of the 2000s to its unjust failure.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
