Every Steven Soderbergh Movie Ranked Worst To Best
15. Side Effects (2013)
When Side Effects was released, Soderbergh said it would be his last film and that he was retiring (something he stuck to for only four years). At the time, this was tragic news, but even if it was his last hoorah it would have made for a fitting farewell.
Side Effects has everything that makes a Soderbergh film tick, from a stellar cast, some genre-bending plot twists, a nonlinear narrative structure and a thrilling, breakneck intensity.
The film follows a woman (Rooney Mara) who kills her husband (Channing Tatum) whilst high on an experimental drug, and must fight her way through the legal system and kept her sinister secrets hidden.
There are moments when the film gets too messy for its own good, but between Mara's phenomenal lead performance and its unrelenting tension, Side Effects is thrilling and original enough to overcome its vices.
