Every Steven Soderbergh Movie Ranked Worst To Best
14. Solaris (2002)
Although it never lives up to Andrei Tarkovsky's flawless original, Steven Soderbergh's version of Stanisław Lem's classic novel Solaris is still a great movie.
Often cited as one of the director's weaker efforts, Solaris is a remarkably unique addition to Soderbergh's filmography.
Still stylishly filmed and sporting some gorgeous cinematography, the sci-fi drama lacks Soderbergh's typically frantic and fast-paced execution, and instead works as a slow meditation on the human spirit and the prospect of second chances.
George Clooney shines as an astronaut caught in space and forced to confront the memories of his dead wife (Natascha McElhone), and Viola Davis and McElhone give equally compelling performances along the way.
It's not as challenging as Tarkovsky's vision or as insightful as Lem's novel, but Solaris is definitely one of Soderbergh's strongest works, in desperate need of a reappraisal.
